Who wants to wait until retirement to love life?

Not me and not you!

Squeezed by all the pressure?

Stressed out? Burned out?

Barely surviving? Running on empty?

That was me!

I spent most of my 40’s and my 50’s feeling the pressure, stress, and burn out.  Feeling like crap, just accepting it as part of professional success and of course, just getting older –

Blood pressure way higher than it should be

Weight way higher than it should be

            Stress level out of control

Have you felt like that? Thinking it was just part of the corporate culture and getting older, but all will be somehow be better when you retire?

I loved my job and thought I was doing the “career thing” the right way.  But in the end, if I didn’t have my health, I didn’t have anything.

My blood pressure was so high I would experience ice cold sensations across my left shoulder and down my left arm.  I ignored it – rubbed my shoulder and arm and got back to work.

I ate whatever was quick – that meant processed – and I ate at fast food restaurants a lot – always fast because I had so much to do.  If I did eat lunch at a regular restaurant, it was with my boss so we could talk about work.

I worked so many hours and would stay plugged in for so long each day, the only way to get to sleep at night was with a glass of wine.

The result?

I still deal with the effects of increased blood pressure from the damage done by ignoring what my body was trying to tell me.

I resorted to liposuction to get rid of the fat that was accumulating from the high fat and processed diet I ate.  (But you know what?  The fat builds right back up if you don’t change your habits)

I drank too much so I could collapse into sleep, only to get up the next morning and do it all over again.

That’s not a life!

You love your family, you love your job, yet when you get up in the morning you say “I can’t wait till I retire”.  And you have this vision of retirement as - that’s when you’ll be able to spend more time with your family – that’s when you’ll be able to spend time with your husband – that’s when you’ll do some healthy cooking and lose weight – that’s when you’ll read that book you’ve always wanted to read – that’s when you’ll spend some time on yourself.

Is that what you want, to wait?  I don’t think so and neither did I.

It’s incredible that for some reason we drink the Kool-Aid and think it’s okay to run ourselves into the ground and put our life and health on hold until that magical day we retire. Even though that might not be for another 20 years, we still hang on to that!

That’s what I used to think – I remember in the morning saying it will all be different when I retire.  But I want you to know you don’t have to wait until you retire.

I remember vividly saying to myself – “When I retire I’ll have time to slow down and appreciate life”  “When I retire I’ll eat better and take better care of myself” “When I retire I’ll enjoy life”.

Have you ever said that?  “When I retire ___________ “ What’s YOUR fill in the blank?

What changed for me?  How did things change?

It was a moment – I really mean a moment – that I heard myself say “When I retire….” And the cold realization came over me that that day may never come.  I was waiting for something that I wasn’t promised.  It shocked me like a cold shower.

I committed to myself I would find a different way.  I promised myself that I would figure it out and not wait until that “magical” day.  And I kept that promise to myself.  You can too.
